Finished the first coat in my new collection this weekend. It’s heavy as hell, took forever to construct, and I’m really happy with it. This year I’m focusing more on pushing myself technically and creating more artistic pieces that one person out of 1000 might randomly see and say THAT’S got to be MINE. And they go off to have snowball fights, walks in the woods and fall in love, in my coat.

This is the last preview I'm going to give, if you are interested in seeing the entire collection, you'll have to attend the show. The show is tentatively set for the very beginning of March. This year I am doing something a bit different and instead of a runway, the clothing will take place in a performance type strolling art piece. I am currently looking for artists and fashion design students who might be interested in showing their work at my collection launch show. Homeslice Label Launch Party and Runway Show

I had such a good time being a part of this event on Friday. Emily Thornhill of Homeslice is so sweet and down to earth and also obviously an incredible designer. Her new collection is gorgeous. The local designers of Detroit need to work together, and I was so excited she asked me to participate in her event along side great talents Camilo Pardo and Terrance Sullivan - both of whom I was so happy to meet and share the runway with. Collaboration is the key to success in this city. Those who stick to that mind set will always be successful. :)

Designer Emily Thornhill: Homeslice
Veteran designer Emily Thornhill, 26, founded Homeslice clothing in January 2011. She is best known as the former co-owner of metro-Detroit grass roots couture label, Femilia Couture. With an AFA in Fashion Design, Emily has designed and manufactured consecutive collections in and around metro-Detroit for the past 5 years. Noteworthy showcases have included events with Fashion Group International, Detroit Fashion Week, Fashion in Detroit and the Metropolitan Opera House while continuously supporting the local Detroit community with charity and mentoring. Her most recent collection was carried by Detroit's 71 Pop. Once named under prior brand ‘Best emerging Design label’ by Real Detroit Weekly. Under Homeslice Emily hopes to promote sustainable living and responsible consumerism by supporting 100% organic, American farmers who supply all her collections textiles.

Designer Terrance Sullivan: Terrance Sullivan
Terrance Sullivan was born in Detroit and attended Cass Technical High School and studied four years in the school's fashion illustration and design curriculum. From January 2000 thru April 2002 Sullivan worked in New York City with designer Maurice Malone. From 2002 - 2004 Sullivan collaborated with designer Michelle Siwy of Siwy Denim on various denim projects. In 2003 Sullivan created his first denim jean with the label T.Sul. This women's flair leg jean featured a detailed wash and resin finish, selling in boutiques nationally. In December 2007, Sullivan launched his first women's ready-to-wear collection with the Terrance Sullivan label. In October 2009 Sullivan opened his first Terrance Sullivan Collection store located in Birmingham, Michigan.

Designer Kelly Sager: Kelly Lynne:
Kelly Sager is a Detroit based designer who focuses on creating edgy, unique, fashion forward clothing, while re-using as many found materials as possible and changing what was once nothing, into something. She has a passion for costuming and combining fashion with art, and is influenced by things that fall under the radar for most; finding beauty in the odd and forsaken. Kelly attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York receiving a degree in fashion design and graduated with honors status of Cum Laude in May of 2009. Kelly returned to the area after graduation. Less than a year later, she launched her first full women's ready to wear line for Fall 2010, which featured 22 looks in a full scale runway show.

Designer Camilo Pardo: Designs by Camilo
Camilo Pardo is a well-established international artist/designer and local Detroit personality. He works in mediums including painting, sculptor, photography, video, furniture, automotive and fashion design. Best known as the Chief Designer of the celebrated Ford GT redesign, Camilo has showcased his advance-concept fashion designs at venues including the Metropolitan Opera House, Detroit Fashion Week and Miami Fashion Week. He has been written up in many magazines internationally including the New York Times and Rolling Stone, has been featured in multiple documentaries, and was asked to visit the White House to commemorate contributions made to the Smithsonian Institute. After Camilo completes a solo exhibition at the Thompson Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA this fall, Camilo will host the Detroit By Design Fashion Show and Homeslice Label Launch in his gallery and creative space.

I had the pleasure of being a part of the People's Art Festival Fashion Show this past weekend. The People's Art Fest is kind of like, if normal boring art fests actually were full of amazing art, instead of ugly paintings of flowers that cost way too much, and pottery. It takes place every year at the Russell Industrial in Detroit, and in addition to art they have bands, food, and this year, a fashion show. Here are some photos!

The fashion show was presented by Anna Goldstone, a fashion stylist whose goal was to show off local talent and how you can mix and match pieces from multiple local designers and create great looks. Involved besides myself were, Helena Theosakakoneko of Kinki Kitty, Justin Smith, Angela McBride of Peace Love Spandex, and Fotoula Lambros of FLD.

On September 23rd, I'm involved in another show, this time the main feature is launching the new collection from designer Emily Thornhill, presenting her collection "Homeslice". The show will be featuring myself, Terrance Sullivan, Camilo Pardo and obviously Emily Thornhill. There are a bunch of great people involved, such as Pop Up Detroit and Rich Rice from Detroit by Design. We had a meeting about it last night and I'm really excited - it's going to be quite the production and many buyers and boutique owners and other industry moguls will be in attendance. I'm so fortunate this summer to have had so many outlets in which to show off my 2011 collection. I can hardly believe it's time to start working on 2012. I will be announcing my 2012 inspiration and sketches here soon, so check back this month.

I'm also doing a slight shift to continue to focus on building my costume design portfolio. I am open this month to take on custom costume design projects for anyone planning on attending Theatre Bizarre this year. Please contact me asap if you are interested at ktsager@gmail.com

Pop Up Fashion Show

The show last night was so much fun. And if the dudes who asked me if my models were cats or ballerinas, I'd like to publicly state here that each collection I do tells a specific story. I'm not that shallow. The fall 2011 collection is about the death of youth.

The collection is actually 22 pieces, but I could only use 8 last night, and I thought it was actually really fun to try and get the same point across with less looks. I used much harder/darker make up, bandaged their hands with lace as if they were in some kind of delicate soft suicidal recovery. I think it came off really well.

It was so much fun to finally be a part of a collaborative event. I loved all the other designers and artists, and to have a runway show with Dethlab playing was just brilliant. It was so intense. Kelly Jean and Rebecca were the finale in black and white swan, and they did this insane stand off that was like swan lake meets mcqueen's spring/summer '05 It's All A Game Show. It was perfect. I almost cried.

A few weeks ago I wrapped up my 2011 Lookbook shoot. I haven't gotten the final images back yet, but here are some "behind the scenes" preview photos. It was a great day, and I was very lucky to work with such a talented crew.

We are planning on another shoot in the very near feature that will be 100% costume design focused. It's going deliciously insane and more awesome than anthing I've ever done before.

Pop Up Detroit Fashion Show

Pop Up Detroit will celebrate their one year anniversary with their first fashion show to be held in New Center Park. New Center Park, located on Second and Grand Blvd, will be transformed into a sculpture garden and fashion runway for one night only.

Pop Up Detroit has inhabited 3 locations in the past year to bring a new experience to their audience each time. Taking local talent into spaces that traditionally have not been used as galleries. As time passes and they begin to grow they hope to branch into new mediums and spaces, while continuing to show case the best talent as well as the most interesting gems in the city.

why i love new york.

New York, I love you.

I didn't used to *love* New York. In fact, during the two years I spent living there while I was at F.I.T going to school, I had a lot of "hate" days. It's 2 a.m., you haven't slept in 2 days because of some insane puff sleeve project, and the E train just decides it's not going to come to take you home. Ever. Or you get stuck in a crowd full of people somewhere between the garment district and times square, someone smashes into you while talking on their cell phone which causes your bag to drop and your new fabric swatches to scatter like leaves all over 7th avenue. You watch as muddy shoes step on your silk organza. When you lean down, scrambling to collect them, because they are needed for a project due in 45 minutes, someone smashes into you and spills coffee on your new vintage leather jacket. It's always too hot, too cold, too smelly, too windy, too snowy, or too something. You don't drive when you live in New York, so you're always INSIDE New York. Engulfed by it. A piece of it. Moving among the sea of bodies, becoming a single living breathing thing, that is the city. When I lived there, I lived alone for two years. I had a few friends, but my boyfriend was still in Michigan, my family far away. For all purposes, I was alone most of the time. I battled cockroaches, rats (both in my apartment, yes), missing trains, crazy cab drivers, rude people, emergency rooms, strep throat, laryngitis, anxiety attacks...and more.

When my time had come and I graduated from F.I.T. and my boyfriend proposed, and I weighed out all my options, and decided to move back to Michigan with him. I also had big dreams that I needed to accomplish immediately (launching my own line, having a show...feeling free to do what I wanted with my business) - which was much easier to do in Michigan. I graduated when I was 30 - I had no time to intern for free with other designers for 5 years before finally getting an offer to *maybe* get someones coffee while they abused the new interns. I missed grass and backyards and my family. I wanted a dog. Less people, less of a fight. It all felt too hard. I was exhausted. Plus, I wanted to make everyone else happy. I came back.

While I still don't regret that decision, a giant piece of my heart remains in New York. I'm not sure I even realized to what magnitude. Last month I went back for the first time since I graduated, it had been two years. I revisited my school, walked the halls, peering into the dark classrooms over the lumpy shapes of rows and rows of tattered dress forms and lines of beautiful industrial sewing machines. The lump in my throat grew. I left school with an aching heart, and walked up 7th avenue to the garment district, where I had spent two years feverishly running from shop to shop looking for the "right" fabric for some new project. I went back to the neighborhood I lived in my first year. Williamsburg, even you had changed. Once a mecca for hipsters and artists, now overrun with baby carriages and screaming children. But still, the lump in my throat grew even more when I saw my favorite taco truck, and the dive bar my boyfriend and I shared many giant beers served in Styrofoam cups, and had great conversations. I went inside, and for old times sake, stole another "out for a smoke!" Rosemary's Tavern coaster. The coasters hadn't changed.

The train stop for the L - which had been my nemesis for so long, now seemed somehow friendly and inviting. Come stand on my platform. I'll probably make you late for something once I finally get here - or better yet, I'll arrive so full of people that you will have no choice but to just stand and watch me go by! Someone will probably sneeze on you. It will smell. It will be uncomfortable. But you love me, unconditionally. And it's true, L Train, I do. You were the first train I ever learned to ride alone.

Long story short, the thing I love most about New York, is the comfort in loneliness. In Michigan, I am constantly reminded of my loneliness. It stares at me, smugly. I don't have many close friends, if any, other than my husband. This is of my own doing because I have a hard time finding people to relate to. But here, you're forced to look your loneliness in the face, and ask it lots of questions. In New York, your loneliness is not only shared and embraced, it's celebrated. You and your loneliness are invited and encouraged to step outside your door and be surrounded by a sea of other people who are alone. You and your loneliness have endless museums to go into, shops to browse at, people to watch. You can ride the subway all day and just read or listen to your ipod and be alone, and it's fine. There is Central Park, the MET, Union Square, Soho, the lower east side, Bryant Park. The best books, the best magazines.

Sometimes I would just walk around Grand Central Station, the New York Public Library. I would stare into the window displays of Chanel, YSL, McQueen, and just dream. Being lonely is okay in New York. It feels good. It feels right. No one stares at me, asks about my tattoos, or judges what I'm wearing. I'm not on display, I'm part of the display. I am weird and New York says, hey, it's totally fine to be who you are. Be weird, we don't have time to care. I never felt this kind of freedom until I lived alone for two years. I think in the years I spent in NYC, from ages 28-30, I grew more into myself than any years of my life before.

So that, I miss with all of my heart. I miss being swallowed up by a city, completely consumed by it. Being allowed to just be "me" with no questions asked. Befriend my loneliness and celebrate it. So in my love letter to New York, I'd just like to say thanks. Thanks for letting me be a part of you. I leave a part of me, with you, each time I come back.

Savage Beauty

I am in New York this week, and attended Savage Beauty, the Alexander McQueen Tribute exhibit at the Met, on Sunday. I intend to go back again tomorrow morning. It was overwhelming, sad, and devastatingly beautiful. I can't leave New York without seeing it at least twice.

Alexander McQueen, since the moment I first looked at his work - which was the No. 13, spring/summer 1999 collection where Shalom Harlow rotated on a platform in a white muslan dress and robots sprayed her with yellow and black paint. - has long been my favorite artist. I don't even think he should be called a designer - while he is obviously an incredible designer - I think artist fits him better - speaks more volume for what he really has accomplished. He doesn't just make clothes. He makes you think, he makes you feel. Sometimes its bad, and sometimes it's good, and usually it's both.

Anyway, like everyone else in the fashion world, I was obviously devastated when he committed suicide last February. It was a huge loss. But I wasn't completely surprised. His mother had died a few years before, and he was very close to her. In interviews, he constantly referenced "when I am gone", and you could tell he didn't mean when he was 89.

I purchased the book Savage Beauty at the exhibit, and I read something in it that really struck a chord with me. He was talking about the shows, and how they were always the most important thing to him. He never really even cared about selling the collections.

(From Savage Beauty:)

"I need inspiration. I need something to fuel my imagination and the shows are what spur me on, make me excited about what I'm doing. When you start getting into the mindset where this is a business and you've got to bring in money, when you're designing with a buyer in mind, the collection doesn't work. The danger is that you lose the creativity that drives you....I want people to see that this is what fashion is about. This is what we're here for. This is why we're unique. There isnt anyone doing anything like I do. It's taken me fifteen years to come up with a concept as a designer, to become fully aware that what I'm doing is personal to me. I don't think I always do it for the people in the audience. I do it for the people who see the pictures in the press afterwards, in newspapers and in magazines. I design the shows as stills and I think that if you look at those stills they tell the whole story."

Reading this passage in the book made me feel extremely comforted. I felt like I finally found someone I could really relate to in this way. The shows are what I love most about being a designer. I make no money off of them - I don't even charge a thing for people to come watch. I just make a collection to tell a story. To be completely honest, I don't even care about selling it. I don't care about reproducing it in 4 different sizes. I don't get off from seeing it in a store. I am not a business woman, as much as people tell me I need to be, I just can't do it. Sometimes, and definitely in the case of certain pieces, I don't even want to sell it. I just want to put on a show, and tell my story. Alexander McQueen may be gone, but his work will continue to live on - through his past collections, and the amazing translation of his work and his vision from here on out executed by the incredibly talented Sarah Burton, creative director for the McQueen house. And I am just grateful for everything he has done for people like me - encouraging us that we in no way, need to follow any fashion rules in order to be great designers.

The Runway show came and went this past Saturday, and it was truly a great night. Everything went smoothly and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves.

Thanks to everyone who helped set up the runway/chairs/stage/lighting, etc (Jon, Gary, Mathew, etc and of course my amazing husband Martin, who always goes way above and beyond for me) - that was a TON of work, and I think during my first show I was a little bit oblivious to it all - but this time I definitely noticed how hard everyone was working, and it meant so much to me. Also a big thanks to Alisha Nichole and Mandi Nixx and her crew for making my models look so beautiful, to all of the models themselves and Megan York at Tracque Model Mgmt for helping me put on a truly beautiful show, 944 Magazine for coming out and covering the event, and last but certainly not least, the Struggle crew for allowing me to collaborate with them and join Recession for the night! Oh - And a HUGE thank you to everyone who simply came, and watched the show. I know there are often 10 different things going on at once in our amazing city, and I really appreciate anyone who made the effort to fit me into your schedule. There's no point to any of this if I don't have people who are interested in what I'm doing. :)

The kelly lynne 2011 collection is inspired by dreams. It takes elements from movies such as Black Swan, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Virgin Suicides and The Science of Sleep and puts them together into a dreamy, youthful, imaginative collection. I design for a specific person. She is an ageless dreamer.

As always, I tried to re-use fabrics that comes from untraditional places, and create a lot of my color from hand dying with natural materials such as fruit and tea. This year my collection will feature materials such as vintage slips, pillowcases, recycled leather, and silk drapery. It is a balanced mix of costume, evening wear, and contemporary looks. The entire collection will be presented in a full runway show on May 21, 2011 at 9:00 p.m. at Oslo, Detroit. Come see it!!!

In a nutshell, Art Van & Styleline Magazine teamed together to create a really cool event that featured 8 local designers showcasing 6 looks from their newest collections, when pared with a furniture vignette that reflected their personal style. The audience got the chance to vote on their favorite designer. I was the winner!

It was a great honor to be given this award, and the $2000 gift card to Art Van. I was very surprised. The room was filled with so much talent, and I was just happy to be asked to be a part of it. Everyone keeps saying to me, "Aren't you SO happy you won?" and honestly, I don't think I really thought about whether I would win or not win - but mostly I was so concerned with how my collection would be perceived. Let's be honest, my designs don't really fit in with the norm. I have major touches of costume/fantasy and fairytale, and maybe even a dusting of sadness in everything I do. Not everyone understands it, and while I know fashion is a cut throat judgemental business, and you HAVE to have a thick skin - that doesn't mean I want to be made fun of.

It is a huge risk to put myself out there, and just to be supported and taken seriously - that was the prize. I have always been a little different from most people I know, and finally it is not a character flaw, but something I can use artistically. Starting a fashion business from the ground up, and slowly, as I enter my 4th year of doing this professionally, it feels so great to be showing my heart to the world and having it be accepted for what it is. Alice's Adventures in Ballet

Check out the photos from Christopher Wheeldon's new full length ballet "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" which premiered this week at the Royal Ballet in London. Can you say my dreams have come true? I am a true fantatic for classical ballet, and to see my favorite story of all time transformed into a full length ballet is just a dream come true. I hope it gets picked up by other companies, or at the very least, I really hope they do it next year, so we can begin planning our long overdue trip to the UK. :)

I had the pleasure of attending Design. Define. Detroit. this weekend. It was a great meeting of the minds with the intention of discussing the possibility of a garment district or sustainable fashion industry in Detroit. This is a topic that I could talk about for hours, but what I wanted to talk about today, is my vision for my future. Where I want my label 'kelly lynne' to go from here. What I want from Detroit. Where I see this company going forward. I had my first successful runway show, with the launch of my first collection - for Fall 2010, last March. Since then I've been working on a ton of side projects. Now it's time for what's next.

Since that show, I have had many different ideas, but this mad tornado of thousands of post-it notes disgusted as bees disguised as too much coffee disguised as mania becomes slightly productive, over time. It's no secret to those who know me well that I have a passion for the obscure. I also have a deep seeded love and history with costuming, theatre, macabre, vaudeville and burlesque. I want to take my passions and my ideas, and find others who share similar. I want to sit in a basement with paint and lipstick and tulle and glass and wood and make things, amazing things.

I once thought about going the more logical route, of concentrating on producing garments that were more ready-to-wear, but also easier to wear. Alot of people who are "fans" as they say, of my designs, all have this complaint of "I love this dress, but I can't buy it because I have no where to wear it." Well, I don't know what to say to that right now, other than, that doesn't make me happy. I will forever welcome custom orders, but I will never again consider paring down my visions to something a person might find at H&M. I would have studied to be a seamstress if that were my goal. My time at FIT was one of the greatest of my life, the most inspiring and magical. I am too afraid that itch will slip from my fingers if I don't continue to cradle it tightly. I don't have any doubts that if I go the way that feels most natural to me, the better my success will be. People all my life have been doing what I like to call "supporting me with apprehension". It's good. It's good to have people looking out for you. But I feel like after so many years of doing things with this thought of "okay, but if it doesn't work out... I'll be fine with it." I've finally realized, it works out. It just does. I have a lot of fairy godmothers, I guess. I am not afraid. You shouldn't be either. What is a life lived, if with fear?

I came back to Detroit, although I had job offers in New York, because I wanted to USE Detroit. I wanted Detroit to be a huge part and a huge influence of this company. At this time, we have the opportunity to use this city in the way that no one else in the country has the mean to. No city is like us. We have to stop trying to figure out how to do what other people are doing, and do our OWN thing. Make people 20 years from now, wish they knew how to be "like Detroit".

I am going to focus more on fashion that is art and art that is fashion, as an overall company goal. I would like to produce fashion shows that are art shows that are performances that are so much more. I don't want people to come to my shows looking for something to wear necessarily. I want people to come to these shows to see things they've never seen before. (Hello, Nurse!) And then without realizing it, adjust their wardrobe when they feel inspired.

So essentially this is a call for help. I need people. I need a gang. I need free thinkers, artists, builders, creative people. Burlesque dancers, pin-up models, make up artists, musicians, fire eaters, other designers....

March 2011. Help me make something amazing.

I haven't posted in forever! That's what happens when you get married then go on a 3 week honeymoon, then get home and it's your birthday, then halloween, then you get a new job. ;)

The bridesmaids dresses and my dress...they all came out great. The hard work paid off, my vision came through. I was happy.

I am now working for Versatile Corsets, which has been just amazing. I will be designing a Kelly Lynne corset for them in the near future as well, which is just the cherry on top of the pie. I couldn't have gotten luckier with this opportunity - to finally combine my love of corsetry, costuming, burlesque, vaudeville with daily work? It has been a dream.

I have a lot to blog about as far as where kelly lynne designs is going, and what is coming up on the horizon as far as my vision for my company and fashion in detroit, etc. But that will have to come later. It's the weekend, and I'm busy. The husband and I just got back from seeing Teasetown Correctional at Savoy, which was amazing - we saw it last year and were smitten - this year was just as good if not better, and I loved the little nod to the devistating Theatre Bizarre shut down this year. We all laughed and it felt good.

Anyhow, I'll leave you with this...here is me trying to tighten one of my new corsets, with the help of no one.

wow. if i weren't getting married in 1 month, I'd do a massive post on fall fashion. but I'm tired and I don't have time. instead I will just mention what great pleasure the september issue of vogue has brought me today. I live for fall. The colors, the textures, the smells, the feeling of something leaving us behind. Something dying, something reborn. I can still smell new pencils and brand new clothes and the anticipation of that which goes into the first few weeks of school starting again. Cider mills, wool skirts, tights. Jack o' lanterns, leather jackets.

When I am in heaven, it will be September and October, over and over again. Scarfs and halloween and that first night you need a coat. And the note you find in the pocket, from the boy you want it to be from.

Roller Derby, Wedding Showers and a Fashion Guerilla Garage Sale

I have had no time to update lately.

I joined the Ann Arbor Roller Derby, and we started practice last week. We practice 3 times a week, it's pretty intense. It does however, make me really, really happy. These girls I am getting to know, are the most amazing, determined dedicated women I have ever met. It's really changing my life and giving me confidence in ways I never had. Derby <3

I look pretty exhausted here, but what can I say, I was! First week of practice, sunday morning, 10 a.m. But I was having way more fun than it looks like, really.

I also had my bridal shower this past weekend. It was at Frenchie's in Ypsilanti, and we had a very lovely time! I have such wonderful friends and family. I felt like such a lucky girl!

Because my wedding is less than 2 months away (aaaahhh!!!) and I still have my own dress to finish, as well as 1 more bridesmaids dress and a few alterations, not to mention all the other last minute details (aaaahhhh!!!), I am doing my very last fashion related thing (until after we get back from the honeymoon mid-october) this coming saturday August 14th. I was fortunate to receive an invitation to be a guest designer at the 2nd Annual Fashion Garage Sale, which was organized by local design labels, Peace Love Spandex, Wound Menswear and Femilia Couture. I came across this post on LAVintage's blog today - Cigarettes and Wedding Bands and I am in love. Elvis and Priscilla are the best. That veil, the look on her face, the look on his face!

2nd runner up - Mia Farrow and Frank Sinatra. To say you were married to Frank Sanatra is just aces. totally insane. How are these people even real? They don't seem real. Were they like us? Did they fight over dirty socks on the floor all the time, not enough dates, the dog?

I wish I could post photos of the things I have been making along the way for my own wedding, but I feel like I shouldn't do that until it's over. I don't want to spoil the surprise for anyone who is coming to the wedding. I have already been told "You know you guys are going to have the coolest wedding ever, right?" That is a lot to live up to. I don't know if it will be the coolest wedding ever, but ... it will be ours, that's for sure.

Taking a moment to provide you with a little self righteous rant about what it costs to make designer clothing in the USA, and why you can get a dress for $7.99 at Walmart. You think people would understand this, but they don't seem to.

Exhibit A: The Lace Ballerina Skirt - currently priced at $165, from my Fall 2010 Collection.

It takes me a good 16 hours to churn out this baby. If i'm working on nothing else, and spend 2 days - 8 hours each day on it.
My regular rate is about $15 an hour. Which I have been told is too low, but whatever. For now, that's what it is. If I were to charge people for the amount of hours to make this skirt at my hourly rate, that would price it at $270. We haven't even factored in the cost of materials. A double faced satin ribbon - about 3 yards needed at around $3 a yard. 3 yards of lace - $39. 6 yards of tulle - $12. Total materials cost - $54. I should actually be charging $324 for this skirt.

Why don't I? Well, priced at $165, everyone I know is asking if I can go lower.

And what do I say to that? Go shop at walmart. Where the prices are low because people aren't paid $15 an hour for their talents. They are paid at most maybe 10 cents an hour and work in a sweatshop in undesirable conditions. People know about this, they hear about it, and it's no mystery. They disregard it and keep on shopping at these places because its the American way to want something for nothing. Then to whine about the lack of jobs or the rising unemployment rate.

I had the pleasure of being a featured designer at one of Detroit's hottest events of the year - Bravo! Bravo! this past Friday. It was really a fantastic fantastic time. Myself, along with local designers William Malcolm, Wound Menswear, Femilia Couture, House of Cedi and Joe Faris, were featured as we each auctioned off a garment to benefit the opera house.

I have to say, the event itself blew me away (the best food, drinks and entertainment I've ever see in one venue!), but the real highlight of my night was finally meeting the other designers. I kind of feel like I'm the "newb" to the scene, and they were all so welcoming and awesome, and just made me feel all fuzzy inside. My insides were ignited with the intense desire to organize some kind of crazy renegade Detroit style fashion show with these loverly human beings. I just want to work together! Like so bad. I want Detroit to stand out when it comes to fashion. We need to make it happen. And with such a great group of people who don't have their heads on backwards, it shouldn't be hard. for realz.

I mean really, look at her. But most of all, I love to work with her because she is super tolerant back stage when it comes to dealing with the "strong personalities" ifyaknowwhatimean. <3lovefestforkellyjean<3<3<3 Aside from being a model, she's also a teacher AND an actress. View her recent appearance in a music video as the date of a guy who realizes when it's already too late, that the girl is a kung-fu master.

I have had so much going on lately, I feel like the past few months have been a massive blur!

1. I was chosen to be one of 6 featured "top michigan designers" for the Bravo! Bravo! benefit for the Detroit Opera House. The event is on June 4th, and I designed a new dress which will be auctioned off that night. Below are some promotional photos taken by the lovely and talented Iryna Zhygalkina.

There is also apparently going to be a commercial for this event featuring myself and the other 5 designers, who are Wound Menswear, William Malcolm, Joe Faris, and Femilia Couture. We took some footage for it last week and I'm excited to see how it turned out.

Speaking of videos, I'm also going to be on television AND the internet! I'm going up to Warren City TV studios next Thursday to be a guest on "The Spotlight", which will feature an interview with me and a small fashion show featuring 6 of my looks from the Fall Collection. Woo! It will run on air for 2 weeks and then be up eternally on facebook and youtube.

I finished one of the five bridesmaids dresses I need to have finished by the 3rd of October. It was way more work than I thought it would be, mostly because I'm an insane perfectionist when it comes to my work - I just hope for my sanity the other 4 go faster and smoother.

Sketches for my Bridesmaids Line

Here are the 8 rough sketches of the dresses I have designed for my bridesmaids line. 5 of them will be "walking down the runway" in my own wedding this October! :) They can be made in any colors or fabric and with or without a tulle trimmed lining, which for my wedding will peek out of the skirt about 4 inches. I'm using a rich black lightweight silk satin for the dresses, with a deep gold oversized bow belt, with gold metallic tulle.

I have been really busy, its insane. Last Sunday I did a photoshoot for Styleline Magazine! I am their featured designer for the upcoming June issue. I am really lucky to have such amazing girls on my team. Johnnell, Kelly Jean, and Lauren were three girls who modeled in my show. When I was told I got to pick three of my designs to be photographed for the magazine, these gorgeous dames were my first choice. They all just really embody the spirit I try and portray in my clothing (as you can see below). Not to mention they are all so beautiful inside, as well as out. Girls like that are few and far between. I was so lucky that they were all available! And I couldn't have done it without my amazing hair stylist, Alisha Nichole, and the make up artist Mandi Nixx. Both girls did the runway show in March, and I'm so in love with their styles. I was really really lucky to have them come back again for this shoot. Love you guys!!

This same day, much later on, I was also involved in the Shei Magazine 10 year anniversary fashion show, Shei X. I donated 23 pieces from both my current collection and my past designs. Other designers involved were Gemela Designs (who did the gorgeous jewelry), Wound Menswear and Femilia Couture. Here are a few of the shots! Saturday night was epic. Everything went better than I could have ever imagined. Tons of pictures are up on my facebook fan page and we will have video up soon too, but there are a few teasers down below.

I need to thank first, my wonderful fiance Martin, who not only BUILT me a runway, but also made more time in his own life to do all the things I couldn't do because I had to dedicate the last 5 months of my life to this and only this. He also did an amazing job flyering, talking me up, and networking. None of this would have happened with out him. I also owe the success of this event to the struggle guys who throw recession (Stos, Mathew, Jon, Frankie, Aaron, Chris, Bryan) for not only letting me take over their venue completely, but also helping with promotion, setting up lights, making a hologram of my name to shine on the curtain(!!!)...thank you Mathew for that!! and just overall being really supportive. And of course all the lovely models and volunteers.

Without someone to look at them, wear them and make them come to life, clothes are just pieces of fabric sewn together. These models, many of whom were my friends, and some I'd only met when they modeled for me - were all just the most spirited, encouraging, beautiful individuals, inside and out. My Volunteers, Andrea..Sadie...Nicole... I would have never gotten through those quick changes without you there!! Mandi Nixx, my make up girl, was fast, and completely amazing. She created the exact make up look I had in my head. I heard she even works on the set of Burn Notice - how cool is that? Had I known, maybe I would have sent some head trauma down the runway. Maybe next time, for sure. (Bloody spring!) Alisha Fraser, did my hair - she was also just phenomenal. She did a mix of vintage pin up with rocker mohawk. It was absolutely perfect. And last but not least, my lovely parents - my sister allison and her husband dave...and all the wonderful friends I have who came out to support me! It was really overwhelming, really.

All in all, it was truly the best night of my life. The room was packed, the lights were flashing, everything went wonderful.

Im getting to the end of the road here. Just a zipper to put in, a few pairs of tights to dye, and some slight alterations in straps and things and then...voila, my Fall 2010 collection will be finished.

My final day of model fittings is today. So far all the girls have been so nice and excited, and look just amazing in the clothes. I'm really getting excited. I hope today goes just as well.

Because this collection has consumed my entire life, I've had little time to blog about anything else. The Fall shows, the Oscars, it's all just slipped by me too quickly. As I sit here waiting for my first fitting appointment on this glorious sunday of spring forward, I will leave you with my one favorite Oscar gown, brought to us by Prada and worn by the adorable Carey Mulligan.

Looks like a pretty dress. Then you get closer and see it's made of teeny tiny kitchen utensils and misc. charms. OMFG this is amazing.

Fall 2010 Collection

Well, I have finished my first collection. It feels pretty amazing and surreal, actually. I wanted to write about the inspiration behind it. People ask me about inspiration, and I have a pretty tough time I think, eloquently talking about my inspirations. I'm not good with words sometime when I'm speaking and get nervous. I can't even imagine if I was interviewed. I'd be like, "Well, it's...inspired by...stuff... and...."

The first piece of this collection was started while I was still in school at FIT. My senior piece was something I had worked very hard on, but also was the first time I had really worked with leather as a textile, and thus spawned my love affair. I somehow knew that this piece would be a part of a full collection. I could see the collection in my head already, and this was back in April of 09. Below is that piece. It was supposed to be "inspired by Versace" and I think I made it work, but overall it's my design and like I said before, really in my head, it was always more of one piece in a 20 piece collection of my own inspiration. It was only fitting that my first piece be one that I made while actually still in New York.

After I graduated and started preparing to move back to Detroit. I started to shop for my fabrics for this collection, and think about where I wanted to go with it. It had to be a fall collection, and it had to feature leather and deep rich dark colors and textiles. I included leathers - the metallics were bought in NYC, but all of the black leather I later scrounged up from entirely found and reused materials. Reclamed old jackets, discarded or donated; belts, pants; furniture coverings, etc. And cut it all up to make into jackets, dresses, belts and more. I have this weird theory that objects retain some part of their former life, deep inside them - not in the weirdo way that it sounds, but just, subtly. I liked using materials that had been used before for an entirely different purpose. Sometimes resale shops can seem so sad, all those discarded items. I wanted to give them another life, and make them beautiful in a new way. The other fabrics include silk taffeta, faux fur, tulle, crinoline, satin and lace, just to name a few. I also hand dyed and hand painted some of the fabrics. I made all the belts and the oversized neck pieces.

We drove from New York to Detroit in a van filled with the last two years of my life in New York, and I began to think about transitions from one place to another and leaving yourself here and there. And so it began.

This collection is about that feeling of holy Fing Sh*t when you experience something totally different than anything you've ever done or seen before. It was inspired by my time in New York and things I experienced there, as well as experiencing Theatre Bizarre for the first time, and all those nights throughout my life where I was led by the hand through an unmarked door, which opened up to something I've never seen before. LA, Paris, Switzerland, kind of a love story through my traveling pasts. These clothes tell a story about the people you find behind these doors, who look like no one you've ever seen in daylight. People you want to get to know, but are unsure you ever really can.

I hope to see you all on March 20th. I have worked very, very hard for this day.

I'm so excited, mostly because this is an amazing site that I visit every day, so I am very honored and flattered. You can read the post here! Our wedding isn't exactly "halloween themed" as she wrote, I think i may have worded it wrong when I was telling her about it, but that's okay. :) Rock and Roll Bride is a wedding blog that features untraditional weddings, and those who go out of their way to really make their wedding theirs. . From our snake ssssssssssssave the date cards, to the black birdcage head piece, and (hopefully) victorian style suits the groomsmen will be wearing, I'm pretty sure our wedding will fall under unconventional - while still carrying a lot of deep tradition and romance, obvs. ;)

The Ballerina Project is the best thing to ever happen. This collaboration of city + dance + photography, is an artistic endevour which grew from the idea of New York City as a magnet for creativity. Each photograph is a collaborative work of dance, fashion design and photography played out against the city's landscape. Some of the shots were taken in Boston, but most were in New York City.

Dane Shatagi, The founder of the project, posted a note on the fan page about their decision to end the project. It sounds like it was just hard to get the shots he wanted and capture the same emotions while having to change dancers a lot and work around busy schedules. Either way, I'm glad it happened while it did, and we are left with the beautiful photos.

I miss ballet. Before I left for New York, I was taking 4 classes a week. I miss the stillness of it, the silence in the movement. Being forced to concentrate so hard on one single thing. It was my therapy. My last winter in New York I went and saw the Nutcracker, performed by the New York City Ballet. I cried halfway through it because it was so beautiful. Many would argue the beauty of the Nutcracker, above all the other millions of beautiful ballets out there, but for me, it is the most beautiful. It was the first ballet I ever saw, with my mom, a long, long time ago. In my current collection, there is a shadow of a ballerina influence, as expected. :) I used to walk down 8th Avenue alot to get to the Garment District, and somewhere near 8th & 39th there is a professional Ballet studio (I haven't been able to figure out which company it is, but that location WAS recently used in a national fashion photo shoot), and often you could catch them dancing in the enormous glass windows that overlooked the city. Man, I miss New York.

I don't have time to do a full rundown of what I think of NY Fashion Week so far, other than to say, I wish I was there.
Here are some brief little snerps (just made that word up) of what's on my mind at this very moment.

I looked at the Marc Jacobs FW2010 collection online before watching the video of the runway show, which was a mistake. At first glance I thought, wow, boring. He's done all of this before. But after watching the show, I was taken back to an old time. Like, the time I first saw a Marc Jacobs runway show, or first learned who he even was. This collection is true classic Marc. Most of it has been done before, but it's been updated and tweaked. It's like classic Marc, love story Marc.
And it made me kind of love him again.

Oscar de la Renta. To me, this man can do no wrong. He was one of the first designers I grew to totally love. My style may change over the years, but I never, ever stop appreciating how everything he does looks so elegant and timeless but modern and hip at the same time. I want to wear his coats and dresses in Paris, with little gloves and a hat.

as for the rest, so far.... I loved the story that Rodarte was trying to tell...ghostly mexican border towns, being stuck in a dream... they have such interesting themes and inspiration, but I just didnt love the collection in its own. The clothes just seemed kind of sad and thrown together. It reminded me of being a little girl and playing with random stuff in the basement like bed sheets and pillows and wigs and stuffed animals, and chopping it all up and making robes. weird.

Alexander Wang's collection was interestingly done for sure. Sort of wall street business woman mixed with bank robber or something? It was beautiful crafted, but I dont think I'd be dying to wear most of it. A little let down mr. wang. But really respectable tailoring, for sure. I still love you anyway because you're so cool.

LAMB, Vena Cava, ACME, and Temperly London were a few of my absolute favorites so far.

Its hard to really pay attention when I have so much work to do still for my own show. I hope I can pull it off. I emailed my models recently to update them on a few things for the show and was saddened by how many had responded with "So excited, hitting the gym twice a day until then!" or "Starving myself just for your show!" I want to say something, but dont want to offend anyone. Half of my models are friends of mine. I can understand feeing pressure to suddenly "look like a model" when you aren't really a model on a regular basis. But ladies, I choose you based on who you are and have always been. I want to make these beautiful friends of mine actually feel as beautiful as they are, and apparently can't see sometimes. Im making clothing you cant buy at H&M, I want to see it on real people. So far the lives of these garments have only experienced hangers and dress forms. They want to breath, to move, to sweat, to smile. My dream person to design for would be Dita Von Teese, not Rachel Zoe. (gross.) it's a woman who is confident, sexy, daring, and doesn't take any shit.

So models, if you're reading this, go eat a sandwich, drink a martini wearing dark red lipstick, and start loving yourselves for god sakes, otherwise, you're never going to be able to pull off my clothes.

It's Valentines Day. Some people think Valentines Day is cheesy and overcommercialized, and all I have to say to that is, sure it is - if you make yours that way! I know mine was spent dressing all saucy, sipping numerous glasses of champagne, and having a great time with my dude at this. Where a red benefit/bidding auction on some outstanding items was held in conjunction with a pretty fantastic theatre performance. I got a dress and a coat that puts other clothes in my closet to shame. Vintage 60's and fits me like a glove. I might just have to throw out the rest of my clothes so this classy ensemble can breathe better.

In addition, this past Friday, Martin and I were extremely lucky to have been part of a portfolio building scheme thanks to the loverly Melanie Maxwell, and got some fantastic engagement photos done spur of the moment. We haven't gotten them back yet, but she posted a preview on her blog and it's looking fantastic! My tights might give away that I had a little valentines day on the brain last week. If it were more for us and less for Melanie, I may have liked more fake blood and less smiling at the camera, but I guess I have to suck it up sometimes. I think they look pretty sweet.

The Telegraph has posted a really great article on the History of McQueen's Catwalk Collections. It gives a fantastic look back at all his prior collections. I remember watching that Spring/Summer 1999 Collection on TV at school, with the robot spray painting the model on the platform, and just getting chills, thinking woah. He does stuff that no one else even comes close to, even thinks about. So many people are talking about Lady Gaga and his recent stuff and everything they know now, but it's really important if you call yourself a fan, to look back at his history and the things he did during all his years as a designer, to really understand just how revolutionary the man was.

Lee McQueen, founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand and fashion house, passed away in his home at age 40. It has been noted it was a suicide. This momentous loss effects me so deeply. McQueen was my most respected designer. Unlike pretty much everyone in the fashion world, to me, McQueen never had a bad collection. He never sent anything out with his name that was less than impressive. He taught us all something we'd never seen, never known, with everything he touched. He was a pioneer of the Avant Garde. Every time we had to use another designer as inspiration while I was in fashion school, I used McQueen, without hesitation. To me, everyone else was kind of boring. I am deeply saddened to think I will never again see something new from him, but feel very fortunate that I was able to take so much from his art when I was a student, and will continue to do so looking back on all he has done over the years. Rest in Peace Lee, I hope you're in a better place, for you anyway. And thank you for all you have done. Your art and your vision has taught many of us to never be afraid to push the boundaries, and just do what people tell us not to, all the time.

It's time for the Fall 2010 fashion shows to start, and it's absolutely surreal that I'm going to be showing my first collection soon. Year after year, it's the Fall collections that inspire and motivate me. Finally, I have something to show for it. My goal is to go beyond everyone's expectations. Yeah, fashion in detroit didn't happen this season, but that's fine. Just because I'm throwing this show myself, doesn't mean it's going to be any less important for me. And I have to say, I'm just really really excited to show off the designs. It's some of the best work I've ever done, if I do say so myself. I have so many people supporting me as well, and there is no way I could have done it without the support and encouragement that I have received so far. I asked 4 of my good friends to join in as models, because they are beautiful and confident and I want to see my friends in my clothes, because ideally, it is them I design for. I also have 6 gorgeous professionals as well, because it's very important to me to promote modeling in Detroit, and give new aspiring models a chance for runway experience. I have amazing people volunteering to further their portfolios by doing hair and make up, and so far 3 photographers (that list is growing daily) who want to come and shoot the event. My fiance' is building us a runway. It's going to be quite the production, and I really can't wait. The work I've done for this is more than anything I have ever undertaken in my life, and I'm a pretty motivated person. And its turning out exactly as I've had it in my head all these years. I am beyond excited to show the fashion world what I have to offer.

Now, onto some pictures. As previously mentioned I have been researching the styling of Katie Shillingford, the editor of Dazed & Confused, because everything she works on seems to turn to gold. That Viktor and Rolf shoot I was all over last month? Katie worked on it.

Shopbop, although how I do love them, has a daily email that highlights their 'look of the moment' in which the editors pick accessories, clothing and shoes and put them together so you can easily shop their site to create a certain look. Today the look is "Accessories with attitude: our tough chic picks." Now, having dabbled in fashion journalism I understand (and often enjoy) the need for these types of constructed labeled stereotypical editorials. But this one in particular makes me think of something I heard at the costume shop this Halloween season.

I'm not a big ring person, I guess because I already have two rings that are very special to me that I never take off (my engagement ring, and my birthstone/diamond right hand ring that my guy got me in Christmas of 2004.) and adding on another is just too much. And finally, Dolce Vita, you make some great shoes. You really do. For example, these unbelievable chain booties would make my feet smile for days.

These, on the other hand are just a sad, sad disaster. They look so beautiful at first glance. Until you get to the toes. Thong toe!? so wrong. The last thing I want to see when I'm looking at a pair of shoes this (potentially) gorgeous, are two thonged toes peeking out the end. So disappointing, dolce vita. I kinda hope to see someone in these somewhere in Birmingham, just so I can point and laugh.

update on fashion in detroit.

So, late last week I found out some really disappointing news. Due to lack of funding, the March Fashion in Detroit show was canceled. They do however, have solid plans to still hold the October show, and I have been invited to show then as well. The only problem with this, is that I'm getting married October 3rd. The FID show is tentatively the 22nd and 23rd. However, creating an entire collection on my own is a really intense amount of work. I've been working on my Fall 2010 Collection for months, and probably won't finish until maybe a week before my show March 20th. I'm afraid that designing a collection while trying to plan my wedding, design & construct my wedding dress as well as my bridesmaids dresses.... it might be too much. I'm still on the fence about it. Who knows, I might realize I actually am super human and try to be uber crazy and just do it.

Meanwhile, there is the issue of the donations. I received about $1100 in donations towards the FID event. It wasn't my ultimate goal, but it was enough to make the fee manageable. Thanks to all the wonderful friends I have, showing my collection to a wider audience in the fashion world, became a reality. So now that it's canceled, do I auto-refund all the donations? I am still having the show at Oslo March 20th, and admission is free to all. I could use the money to make it a little more spectacular. I have also heard that another large scale event is possibly in the works, with bigger sponsors, and if it happens, it will be on the same date as FID was supposed to be. If said event actually happens, it's been hinted that I might be invited to show. I currently dont have any information about if there will be a designer's fee or not, but I'm trying to find out.

If you're reading this, and you're one of the amazingly awesome people who donated to my fund... what are your thoughts? I would really appreciate hearing them. One fear I have, is that I email everyone and give the the option to leave the donation towards future events, or to ask for it back...well, I'm worried people won't feel comfortable asking for it back - which, by all means, you shouldn't feel obligated to not ask for it back AT ALL. I wouldn't think any less of anyone. I mean, we're in the middle of a recession. I don't have any money either, so I would completely understand.

Five tips for myself on how I intend to tackle designing and constructing a 30 look line in two months.

So actually I'm lying, I have the collection about 30% done. But still. 70% in a little over two months is still no joke.

1. Drink more water, eat healthier. Okay so I already eat pretty healthy. I've been a vegetarian for 17 years now (and as I type that I'm kind of in awe of that insane number). However, improvements can be made. When under stress I tend to substitute caffeine and sugar for water and food. More protein (tofu and quorn, no processed faux meat products full of salt.) and raw veggies and nuts.

2. Join a gym. I have been looking for months for a treadmill on craigslist, but affordable quality seems impossible to find, I'm assuming because it's the beginning of the New Year and everyone is going nuts with the lose weight! resolutions. SO, lucky for me, a new gym is opening almost across the street from my house. My fIance even told me he'd join with me. Working out always gives me incredible energy, so this will help for stamina and long nights.

3. Play songs that I have always associated with "the runway" while I'm working. Hearing music that I can picture models stomping down the runway to, always makes me want to make clothes.

4. Make a giant inspiration board Seeing what has been accomplished by my fashion peers always motivates me.

5. Put coffee pot and plenty of french roast, inside studio. and ignore #1. Who am I kidding? there is no way I can finish an entire collection with "less caffeine". ha!

DONATION UPDATE

I'm a little under halfway there still, but at this point there is no going back. I'm going to withdraw all the money I've saved for my October wedding. (don't worry, my fiance's idea actually.) and pray I'll still have a wedding in October. THAT'S how much this means to me. (Although, not going to lie, getting married means more to me.... but I know we'll still get married no matter what. City Hall?)

$2500 for an event in Detroit, why?!

At first asking people for donations didn't even occur to me. It was a few friends of mine who said, hey, set up a donations site, we'd contribute! after I had sadly mentioned that I was invited to show at Fashion in Detroit, but was unable to afford the designer's fee of $2500. I had to think about it for a minute. What would people think of me, begging for money? A few more people then spoke up and encouraged me some more. Apparently when you're an artist, working towards a dream, people really respect that. If I could even get near the fee on my own, believe me, I wouldn't have started the fund. But i'm not going to beat around the bush. I work 20 hours a week, and make $10 an hour at the only job I currently have. My student loans are about $500 a month. You do the math. I really AM a starving artist. Well, not literally since I have an amazing fiance who also believes I'll be rich and famous one day, so he feeds me once in a while.

That being said, why? Why wouldn't I want to spend $2500 on fabric to make more clothes to sell? Or pay off a few months worth of those heavy student loans? I went to the show in October, Fashion in Detroit's first show, as a finalist in the local designer competition. I was one of three, and the winner was invited to show at the next event, which is this one up coming in March. I did not win, but at that moment I realized I needed to do whatever it takes to get into the next show, fee waived or not.

To do something new involving fashion, in a city like Detroit...and to make it succeed, you really have to do it well. There have been many attempts in the past and if you never heard of any other fashion shows in Detroit, well, its because those attempts never went very well. Fashion in Detroit was organized, clean, and impressive. The tents, lighting and sound were on par with NYC Fashion week (though obviously on a much smaller scale). Everyone went smoothly. The models and the clothes were beautiful. The photographer area was packed with flashing lights, and the press were everywhere. It's not free to pull something like this off, and FID is running on sponsors and designer's fees. They also pay for A list models, make-up and hair.

I spent 2 years in New York, and helped out on many shows at New York Fashion Week, including Diesel and Cynthia Rowley. I've seen it done by the big guns, and the Fashion in Detroit show in October did not make me miss it. It didn't make me think, wow, I need to go back to New York to ever make this work. Instead, it gave me hope for the city of Detroit and the growing fashion scene here. It made me want to be a part of it in any way I possibly could. I wanted to find a way to be remembered as one of the young designers starting out just as it was growing.

I just got back here in May from New York. In fashion you have a shot (if you're lucky), and then it's gone. This is my shot to show people what's in my mind and what I can do. There might not be another time. To me, that's well worth $2500.

(The current update is that i'm 35% of the way to the goal, with 2 weeks left.)

And to support the other side of the fence and allow the people who can't attend fashion in detroit, i'm still throwing a renegade fashion show Saturday the 20th at Oslo. This is going to be "my show". My friends are modeling, we're making the set ourselves, our friends are DJing. It's going to be amazing, and free to all. Did you ever have a dream? I was asked to show my Fall 2010 line in the Fashion In Detroit shows this March. This has been a goal of mine since they first started this event back in August. It's been a dream really. This is a full scale fashion show, put on some very remarkable people, to try and make fashion a bigger reality in Detroit. This is an opportunity that would be so beneficial to my career as a designer. The downside is that the designer's fee is $2500, and I need to have this amount by the end this month (January). Some friends of mine have made a suggestion that I set up a donation site. So low and behold, here it is! Any amount would be highly appreciated. I feel very strange asking for money, but this is so important to me, that I'm willing to try anything. My appreciation goes beyond words.

In addition, any garment you see on my website is a one-of-a-kind, and currently for sale. Please contact me for details.

The shows are March 19th and 20th, and tickets are $50. Whether I am able to participate or not, I will still be having my own show on Saturday, March 20th at 9 p.m. at Oslo, Detroit. Admission is free and you will be able to view the entire collection.

2009 was a pretty fantastic year for me. I full filled my dream of getting a degree in fashion design, from one of the greatest fashion schools in the country, and it was no walk in the park that's for sure. But wow was it ever the most amazing experience of my life. Shortly after I graduated my boyfriend proposed to me in Central Park. We moved back to Michigan in last May, and in mid-November bought our first house. I got my pug around the same time. (I have had a crazy obsession with black pugs for like 10 years.) So I have to say, it has been one of the greatest and most memorable years of my life thus far, that's for sure.

What else do I love and remember about 2009?
Here are some that come to mind, in no order.

1. Lady Gaga. She's got catchy songs, but it was really her fashion & style that won my heart. I got chills the first time I saw Bad Romance. Plus I love that she's this hot blonde pop star who has a totally creepy and slightly twisted side.

2. Leather everything. My parents rode harleys and took us to crazy biker parties when my sisters and I were growing up. I have always been a fan of black leather and the tough look. So it was a real joy to me when leather made the gigantic explosion into fashion. Not that leather has ever been *out* of fashion - it's certainl a timeless look and an ageless 'textile', but in '09 I really think it's more prominant than ever. Everyone wants leather everything, and I'm certainly a supporter.

3. Theatre Bizarre. Self titled, "The most horrific Halloween Masquerade" - this was an event that was so fantastic and made such an impact on me. It inspired me in my studio, in my art, and well, made me feel like a kid again. It's been along time since I stayed out till 5 a.m. and didn't want to go home. This is the greatest and most fascinating halloween party, ever. And I feel I can say "ever" with absolute confidence. Where else in the world besides Detroit can you take over an entire block of houses and turn them into an entire different world. Think coney island, more twisted, set in an older time (20's? 40's?). 4. Michelle Obama Our generation's Jackie O. I love just love her. I love her poise, her elegance, her youthfulness and her eye for style. (photo cred: blogs.smarter.com)

5. Mad Men The smoking, the drinking, the style. New York City in the 1960's. As a true vintage fashion FANATIC, this show was my dream come true. Betty Draper and Joan Harris are the two characters whose looks I always drool over. I really feel that the show has made an impact on men's fashion as well. The 'gentleman' look is making a big comeback. At least among my friends, I'm seeing more and more suits out at the bars. I'm a big supporter of that.

6. Our outfits on NYE My friends and I celebrated in style and had a prom themed New Years party. I was really really happy with my fiance's willingness to go along with my desire to channel the 80's.

Here's to a new year. My goals are to make 4 bridesmaids gowns, and my wedding dress; and hopefully have my first runway show in March. I want to get around to painting our kitchen and bedroom, and put up a giant wall mural in the basement. I want to get back in shape, sleep more, and teach my dog to love walking on her leash. Start painting again. Get my fiance to finish our wedding guest list. Send out save the dates. Create something from unconventional materials. Open my online store. I've got a busy year ahead of me, but if 2009 has taught me anything it's that the busier you are, the more you accomplish, and the more memorable and fun that year will be.

This is the Rodarte I know and love, The little structured dresses and skirts...one shoulder sleeve looks...combination fabrics and textures. Just beautiful. I love how they keep the subtle hint of bondage in nearly every collection they do, and always seem to stay true to their own aesthetic no matter what's going on in the current trends.

One of my new years resolutions is to start blogging more. Not just about what I'm doing, but about what inspires me and excites me. For those who know me, I'm really into the creepy, weird, and unusually beautiful. I love to find a way to translate into fashion. Here are some of my favorites. The already legendary Tim Burton inspired shoot that ran in (sept?) Harper's Bizarre.......

I'm sure there are many people out there who might find these photos disturbing and not beautiful or even all that fashion focused. But check out these photos from Numero 88. They could have easily been inspired by something as powerful as the Tim Burton photoshoot. It only takes a tiny element from something you see, to create something unique on your own. Everyone has a different perspective on art, and that's why I love fashion design. It's wearable art - and there is nothing cooler than someone liking your art so much they actually want to wear it.

Here is a photo I have held onto for almost 4 years now. I really want to recreate this type of setting and design and feel for a future photo shoot. So absolutely beautiful.

And finally, the Rodarte sequin ribcage dress. Rodarte is Target's "Go International" designer of the month. Rodarte also happens to be one of my favorite design duos. Generally the Go International lines at Target really interest me from a designer's stand point, but I rarely buy any of the pieces for myself - just because I'm a real stickler for wearing things that no one else is wearing. But this rib cage dress had to be my exception. It's so me in so many ways. I mean, Donnie Darko is still my favorite movie. ;) (The dress is actually sleeveless...they styled it with a striped shirt underneath, which is a little too "lolly goth" for me, but I would wear it with an oversized boyfriend black cardigan and serious heels.

There are some really exciting things on the horizon. We are moving into our new home this weekend, which includes a beautiful new studio room for me! In two weeks I'm doing an all natural light photoshoot with the beautiful Mariah as my model, and Emily Hudson is doing the photography, and my friend Nani doing make-up. We are going to shoot 3-4 looks from my pre-fall collection.

During the break between Christmas and New Years, I'm going to have the pleasure of working with a fantastic team, including Michelle Matiyow of LM Studios and Rebecca Stevens, who is a fantastic stylist and also the new editor of 944 Magazine.

I am so excited for these photo shoots and to finally show off my post-college work.

I'm excited to say that I'm in this month's issue of 944 Magazine. You can actually read it online by going to 944.com/magazine or just click here, and then search for the "Detroit" version. When viewing the magazine online, I'm on page 81! There is a designer profile on me. The magazine is free and can be found in various location around metro detroit, so look for it!

Following that, on page 82, is an article I wrote. I interviewed Terrance Sullivan, who is a local denim designer who just opened up a shop in Birmingham. He was a delight to talk to and very inspirational.

I was also mentioned by annarbor.com here. In which they just mention, that I was mentioned, in 944. Which is pretty funny.

This was by far one of the busiest and best October's ever! It seemed as if Halloween lasted forever. Working at a costume shop definitely has it's perks. I think I dressed up in a total of 6 different costumes throughout the last 2 weeks of October. Here are some of my favorites!

Evil pumpkin queen costume for Theatre Bizarre on 10.24 and again for Necto on 10.26

The last week before Halloween we had theme days at work - this was for "eras" day. Everyone swore I was 80's but I still stick to my guns on the fact that I'm definitely early 90's.

and my favorite of all - Halloween night I dressed up as an alien space vampire zombie girl from the 1970's - in true classic B-Movie style. Martin was a zombie red shirt from star trek. This fabulous dress i'm wearing is a vintage piece from Fantasy Attic's costume collection.

I am taking a brief hiatus from any designing or design orders or request until late November. We bought a new house and are closing on it November 10! So I don't expect to even begin any new design projects until late November/early December. But I'm contemplating concentrating soley on my wedding gown and my bridesmaid's dresses from here on out. But I'll play it by ear!

Halloween fashion

We are going to Theatre Bizarre on Saturday, so I thought no better time than the present to create the Halloween costume I've always dreamed of making. Evil pumpkin queen! Since I took these pictures I also made an evil pumpkin head magic wand, and in lieu of the forecast promising lovely temps in the 48 degree range (before it gets dark!) I actually lined my velvet cape with polar fleece. I'm going to do some pretty wild things with my make up too, inspired by the classic jack o' lantern. Basically this idea was floating around in my head because I have this secret dream of costuming a Tim Burton movie one day about a character like this. Hopefully early next week I can post some pics of me in this thing, along side my dapper looking fiance who will be also stylishly adorned in a stunning Victorian suit including a 3 piece cutaway coat suit, top hat, monocle, ascot and cane.

What am I working on right now? My halloween costume!

Here are the beginning stages of the evil pumpkin queen.

Still have lots more to do on this costume before Saturday! Adding a collar, a lace top, more volume, a long cape, and more! I am lucky enough to have gotten a ticket for Theatre Bizaare before they sold out! I'm so excited.

My most recent article for annarbor.com is a pretty good one, I think. I had fun writing it anyway.

In mid-november we will be moving into our new house which has a giant new studio for me! So expect many more design related posts in the future, as I anticipate really getting my game back with a proper venue for creation.

Fashion In Detroit, 2009

I received some great news yesterday! I am one of 3 finalists for the Fashion In Detroit local designer competition! A few months ago I submitted 5 photos of garments I have designed, plus my resume and a cover letter. All Michigan based designers (both professionals and students) were urged to enter this competition with the chance to win a grant - which would basically guarantee them a spot in next season's show (this February) and it would waive the $2500 designer's fee. Myself and the other two finalists (identity unknown at this point) will take the stage on the first night of the show (October 1st) and the event hosts will offer the audience a presentation of the 5 designs submitted by each designer, and then they announce the winner live.

I'm very excited to be a part of this! As far as I'm concerned, I'm already a winner being invited to attend both events and the VIP after party, plus all the great people I'll get to meet. That being said, it would be amazing to win and to be able to show a collection this spring!!
